Botulinum Toxin A is popularly known as ‘Botox®’ is a prescription drug that when given as a therapeutic dose temporarily paraylses muscle movement for up to 3-4 months.
Was orginally used by a Dr Jean Carruthers whilst treating people with blepherospasm, (uncontrolled blinking of the eye) and whilst the blinking improved many noticed their wrinkles became softer. Dr. Carruthers experimented and is now a very successfully treatment for lines and wrinkles, especially the glabella (frown ) area.
Botulinum Toxin A (Boto®x) has been used for many years within the NHS treating children with Cerebral Palsy, thereby relaxing muscles to enable them to improve their walking, this is now helping stroke victims.
Today Botulinum Toxin A in now licensed for hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) and for cosmetic use for the perirobital (crow's feet ) and glabella (frown Lines) up to the age of 65 years. By using this drug elsewhere it is being used off- license. A prescription is required for every treatment.

Side effects are generally rare with this treatment . Some bruising, swelling or redness may occur. Very occasionally, a temporary drooping of the eyebrow or eyelid may occur and can last for a few weeks although this depends upon the individual.
