Wrinkle Reduction with Botulinum Toxin A

Botulinum Toxin A is popularly known as ‘Botox®’  that  are injections to relax the muscles in your face to smooth out lines and wrinkles,, such as  crow's feet and frown lines.

These injection are not permanent as they usually last between 3-4 months 

These injections can only be prescribed in a face-to-face consultation with a qualified medical practitioner , such as a Doctor, Dentist or a Nurse Prescriber. It is important that the person treating you is fully qualified and ensures your treatment is given safely. Important to ask about medical insurance and training. 

The Botulinum Toxin treatment was originally used by a Dr Jean Carruthers whilst treating people with blepharospasm, (uncontrolled  blinking of the eye) and whilst the blinking improved many noticed their wrinkles became softer. Today is now a very successfully treatment for lines and wrinkles,. 

Botulinum Toxin A (Botox®) has been used for many years within the NHS treating children with Cerebral Palsy,  Stroke Victims,  Migraine suffers, Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) and now for excessive Bladder Control . Today now has a cosmetic licensed to treat the facial lines and wrinkles up to the age of 65 years young . 

You are unable to have the treatment:

If you are under 18 years of age 

Pregnant or breast feeding 

If you have a skin infection 

If your unwell in any way

If you have a neuromuscular condition , such as Myasthenia Gravis, Muscular Dystrophy,

Autoimmune diseases Lupus, 

Taking certain medications

If you are having IVF treatment

What does the procedure involve:

You will have your photograph taken of the area's to be treated, and sign the consent form. Your face will be cleansed, ensuring all make up is removed. The Botulinum toxin A will be injected into the muscles in your face with a very fine needle. You will be asked to move the muscles to ensure the best placement of the injections. It usually takes up to 10-15 minutes 

Immediately after treatment you may see a small raised area on the skin that settles very quickly.  Important to be aware you will not see results straight away . It takes about 2-3 days to start to work and full effect within 2-3 weeks . By using the latest techniques  the wrinkle  treatment can look very natural  even after one treatment

Post treatment .  

Do not rub or massage your face for 3 days 

Avoid vigorous exercises for 2 days

No sunbathing, sunbeds and the sauna for 2 days

Avoid facials, massages, derma-planning, IPL  and other facial treatments for 2 weeks.   

 Possible Risks 

As with any medicines Botulinum Toxin A does carry some risks. these are very small and is important to ensure these are discussed fully at your consultation : 

You may experience a headache or flu-like symptoms for 24 hours

Swelling, redness or bruising may occur at the injection site

A frozen look - where you might not be able to move the muscles within your face.  It has to be pointed out that some clients may like that look which is why a consultation is so important

Temporary weakness or droopiness of your eyelid  or eyebrow (Ptosis)   This is Rare but If does happen contact the practitioner and advice will be given 

Very rarely, serious problems such as blurred or double vision when treated around the eye area or breathing difficulties if the neck area is injected.
